The Cons of Luxury Vinyl Plank & Why Wood Flooring is the Better Option

By February 23, 2026No Comments

It’s important to weigh your options when you’re deciding on the type of flooring that you’re choosing to install in your home. Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) has become increasingly popular because it resembles wood and claims to offer a lower price point than the wood that it’s imitating. However, there are some underlying factors that you may want to consider before deciding.

Upfront Cost vs Long-Term Value

Today’s homeowners tend to look for ways to cut costs on any remodeling or new features. One component that often gets the cheaper choice is flooring. LVP offers a lower upfront cost, however, those costs could continue and elevate depending on how the floors are maintained.

LVP is a thinner material that isn’t as durable as wood. They can become easily scratched or endure water damage. When this occurs, the problem isn’t easily fixed. Since LVP has a click-lock or glue down installation process, it can make replacing a specific board incredibly difficult and may require a full replacement.

Wood floors are durable and can easily be sanded if there are any scratches or dents to ensure a smooth surface and appearance in your home.

Lasting Power in Your Home

Wood floors can last for generations if they’re cared for properly. Every 8-10 years it may be beneficial to have them sanded and refinished if there’s any visible damage or wear. This process can help your floors continue looking their best for years.

LVP, on the other hand, really only lasts for up to 10 years. Since they’re thinner material, and not as durable as wood, they’re subject to a variety of damage and wear that can result in dents, chips, whole sections missing, and even significant fading from prolonged sun exposure.

Aging with Grace

While wood floors offer durability and longevity, they also age with your home. Small amounts of wear add character and charm and simply amplify the natural look and feel of the wood.

With LVP, there’s an expiration date. LVP also can’t be refinished, so if you choose an interesting color for your floors, you’ll be stuck with that color if/when it goes out of style.

Environmental Factors with Your Flooring

Wood flooring is a sustainable choice as most wood used in building is sourced and harvested responsibly, and it can be reused. LVP is made from petroleum and can’t be refinished or repurposed. It also features adhesives and plastic components that could result in VOCs (volatile organic compounds) over time.

Choose the Right Option for Your Home’s Floors

If you’re looking for quality flooring that’s going to last you the years and require minimal maintenance without needing to be replaced, wood floors are a great option to choose. While LVP offers the look of wood floors, they’re susceptible to wear earlier, and could end up needing to be replaced before their expected expiration.
